The foreign minister missed an opportunity to be firm about the challenges from Beijing and the US, and Australia’s defence.

US President Donald Trump used his address to a joint session of Congress to lay out his vision for “the golden age of America” built on an America-first approach.

It’s a worldview that rejects the US’ traditional role of global leadership, underpinned by the international rules-based order in favour of domestic policies that prioritise America’s economic primacy, reshapes the US government, cracks down on illegal immigration and ends foreign aid.
