Why working hard no longer buys you a home in Australia

We need to end the federalism disconnect and enable states to strip away their own government-imposed costs on new housing.

Seems politicians will do anything for a vote. On the hustings, both major parties defied what we’ve learnt about Australia’s housing crisis, promising incentives to first-home buyers that can only be a temporary illusion/delusion.

It’s disappointing, as there have been some good initiatives in recent times. Not nearly enough of course, but the government program to encourage states to boost housing supply and the opposition’s promise of $5 billion for housing infrastructure are steps in the right direction.
