Politics in France has always been full of surprises.

One of the biggest was Emmanuel Macron’s rise to the presidency in 2017, bringing an end to the old order of socialists versus the centre-right. This time the French mobilised quickly to stop Marine Le Pen’s party from winning a majority in the second round of parliamentary elections.
