Why Chalmers must lift living standards to become PM

If we get more of the same from the treasurer he will not have a compelling case to take over as prime minister.

Approaching the federal election, there was a school of thought in political circles that if Labor fell into minority government, Anthony Albanese could be replaced as prime minister within 18 months.

Treasurer Jim Chalmers was the favourite to succeed him, although a lack of support among the NSW and Victorian right factions meant this was not assured.
