Trump tariffs cut deep for America’s trillion-dollar ASEAN partners

The damage to Washington’s image and its relationships with the rest of the world, including South-East Asia, may be lasting.

Donald Trump has once again wielded tariffs as a bargaining chip, under the misleading pretense that foreign governments pay them and will miraculously restore American jobs.

This narrative is not only false – it is economically harmful. His tariff aggression toward the Association of South-East Asian Nations is not just deeply disappointing. It is profoundly destabilising for the global economy.
