Trump’s chaos kills American exceptionalism

Investor belief in US superiority drove Wall Street to sky-high valuations, but the president’s trade war is now eroding this conviction.

Donald Trump insists he wants to make America great again. But his tariffs are undermining what made America a great power in the first place. American exceptionalism is under threat from Trump’s trade war and other confidence-sapping actions.

For over 70 years, American exceptionalism has been underpinned by world leadership on free trade and globalisation, its network of foreign security allies and partners, deep capital markets, the US dollar reserve currency, technology advancement, risk-taking entrepreneurialism, world-leading productivity, and military supremacy.
