The housing crisis isn’t about buyers, it’s about broken supply

Without serious reforms, we risk cementing a future where younger Australians are trapped in a cycle of inflated prices and growing debt.

How to fix the housing crisis? A good place not to start are the weekend’s campaign announcements that show both sides of politics need to offer bolder supply-side solutions to fix property affordability rather than demand-driven gimmicks.

Critical elements of both major parties’ policies include Labor’s pledge to subsidise first-home buyers so they only need a 5 per cent deposit and the Coalition’s tax deductions on interest payments for loans up to $650,000 on newly built homes for five years. Both seek to address intergenerational inequality by lowering barriers that have priced younger generations out of the property market.
