Reserve Bank board member Ian Harper has warned that efforts by governments to bring back high-cost manufacturing from overseas will make Australians poorer.

“We need to be well aware of the opportunity costs when we decide to opt for the higher cost domestic alternative, particularly when that’s disguised behind a whole panoply of subsidies,” Professor Harper told an Economic Society of Australia event on Wednesday evening.
