Populist politics won’t make insurance cheaper

Peter Dutton has reached for a big stick without any attempt to explain how breaking insurers up into smaller companies would lower the cost of insurance.

Peter Dutton’s threat to break up insurance companies is another example of opportunistic politics overriding a deeper conversation about a pressing national challenge.

The opposition leader has seized on the increasing cost of home insurance ahead of an election to be fought over the cost of living (which could be called as early as Sunday if the board of the Reserve Bank of Australia cuts the cash rate on Tuesday).
