Outgoing governor Philip Lowe defended the Reserve Bank’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic in a farewell message to staff as he left office this week, and described his sadness about leaving after 43 years – and unwanted media attention.

Friday was Dr Lowe’s final day as the RBA’s eighth governor after Treasurer Jim Chalmers opted against offering the central banker a three-year extension to his seven-year term. His deputy, Michele Bullock, will start her term as governor on Monday.
