It was the last great battle between Kerry Packer and Kerry Stokes that cemented Gina Cass-Gottlieb’s confidence in her ability to go toe-to-toe with the most ruthless players in corporate Australia.

The year was 2005, and Packer wanted the five-year AFL broadcast rights for his Nine Network. He was willing to pay $780 million to get them – up from $500 million for the previous deal. When Nine’s bid was lobbed just before Christmas, the newspapers reported it as the “richest TV deal” in Australian sports history.
