Jaclyn Symes promised to fix the budget. She squibbed it

Jaclyn Symes made all the right noises and sent all the right signals in the first five months she has had the job. But when she had the opportunity to embark upon much-needed budget repair, she didn’t.

In her first comments after being sworn in as Victoria’s new treasurer, Jaclyn Symes declared she liked fixing things, that she thrived on a challenge.

She said she would be a different treasurer to her predecessor Tim Pallas, who oversaw a massive deterioration in the state’s finances. She vowed to bring a different perspective, to repair Victoria’s reputation as poor economic managers, to fix the budget.
