Is Katy Gallagher tough enough on spending to be finance minister?

The Canberran is responsible for the expenditure side of the budget. But that is at a 40-year high and there is no plan to rein it in.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Treasurer Jim Chalmers have copped flak from budget watchers for overseeing the biggest increase in federal spending for a first-term government since Labor’s Gough Whitlam in the 1970s.

But another senior Labor minister has largely escaped scrutiny.
