The reimposition of sweeping lockdowns in Victoria to stem a resurgence in COVID-19 cases will cause consumer spending to fall behind the rest of the country and deal a blow to the state's nascent economic recovery.
Spending data from Commonwealth Bank just days into the initial lockdown of 10 postcodes in Melbourne had shown that Victoria's spending recovery was lagging behind the rest of the country.
