Police will ramp up patrols in the 10 Melbourne postcodes placed under lockdown and residents will face random stops and ID checks as the government moved to reintroduce restrictions in hotspot suburbs for four weeks.

Anyone in the 36 lockdown suburbs caught flouting restrictions that start at midnight on Wednesday will face on the spot fines.
