Fed says September rate cut is ‘on the table’

Washington | The Federal Reserve could start cutting interest rates as soon as September if inflation, jobs and economic growth conditions remain on their current path, chairman Jerome Powell said on Wednesday (Thursday AEST) after keeping rates on hold.

Policymakers voted to keep the benchmark overnight interest rate at the current 5.25 per cent to 5.50 per cent range, but set the stage for a rate cut at their September 17-18 meeting.
