Big tech should stay in the sin bin until children are safe online

New laws could be less about booting kids off platforms and more about denying companies the ability to host young users unless they prove their products are safe.

The Albanese government’s social media “kids’ ban” is unusual and unprecedented. On Friday, national cabinet endorsed the plan to legislate a minimum age for social media, opening the gates for imminent legislation.

Popular with parents, enraging for big tech and concerning for experts on children’s digital wellbeing, it is certainly not a reform package for the faint-hearted.
