Avoiding dead ends on the economic road out

Agreeing on the best exit route from the economic crisis is going to be even more difficult than the road out of the health crisis.

Everyone is in furious agreement. Australia can't afford a return to business as usual when it's finally time to try to resuscitate the economy. The politicians, the Reserve Bank, the business leaders and even the unions are all sending a similar message. Any prospect of real economic recovery and jobs growth will require big changes.

But pride in Australians' ability to co-operate in so successfully "flattening the curve" in health will be severely tested by different views of just what changes are needed when it comes to economic revival. For now, the need for unity to fight COVID-19 is limiting public disagreement. No one wants to be first to rule things in or out and jeopardise the rare degree of top-level co-ordination and cohesion on show. Voters clearly favour "Team Australia" and the national cabinet continuing.
