Sometimes the numbers don’t tell the whole story. The ASX 200 might have risen 19 per cent since the start of the year, but there would be few chief executives who will look back on 2019 with any great fondness.

A sluggish economy, political uncertainty caused by the federal election and persistent crises in energy and climate change weighed heavily on the entire economy.
