The survival of Australia’s consumer is shaping up as one of the biggest surprises this earnings season as retailers deliver robust results in a vote of confidence for the economy, casting further doubt over the case for early 2024 rate relief.
Reserve Bank of Australia governor Michele Bullock said the overall consumer spending picture was still one of a slowdown, and would serve to help tame inflation.
