The big winner from Qantas’ record half

The airline’s profits are flying high on the back of slashing staff and exploiting a domestic duopoly serving eager customers ready to pay record high ticket prices.

One merciless word sums up one of the main reasons Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce was able to deliver record first-half results in his domestic, international and frequent flyer businesses: “exits”.

This word, which refers to sacking almost 10,000 people, pops up in the Qantas half-year earnings presentation in the assessment of the progress of the company’s three-year “recovery plan”.
