It’s 5.30pm on the eve of the Independence Day long weekend in the United States and the bars and restaurants of Manhattan are uncharacteristically quiet. But in a large, low-lit dining room in the Flatiron District, every seat is taken and, at the door, hopeful diners are being turned away.
This is Cosme, the Mexican-inspired restaurant that just over a week earlier landed at no. 23 on The World’s 50 Best Restaurants list, outranking every other venue in New York City. At the same awards, in late June, Cosme’s charismatic young leader, Daniela Soto-Innes, was crowned the World’s Best Female Chef.
