When it comes to sustainable travel, few tourism sectors have powered as hard as the cruise industry to overhaul their image and practices. But first, the big picture.

Cruise ships  account for "0.2 per cent of all global carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuel combustion and cement production", according to the Global Sustainable Tourism Dashboard, an international research effort co-led by Australia's Griffith University.
