Ican’t quite decide if it’s a good thing or not, but no one seems to have heard of Cayenne, the place where I’m about to board a cruise ship. The Smart Traveller website is still returning no advice a couple of weeks before departure, and my travel doctor asks me twice where I’m going before consulting a map, as if I’ve made it up.

The Australian Financial Review’s intrepid world editor at least knows Cayenne is the capital of French Guiana, a tiny overseas department of France in South America. However, he’s never visited, despite having spent many years living and working on that continent.
