“Fibre is unsexy,” concedes gut health guru Dr Will Bulsiewicz when asked to comment on the traditional image of his favourite nutrient. While protein has become synonymous with gym-honed physiques, the less-glamorous fibre has typically been known as a lavatorial necessity.

“It comes from that old view of fibre, where we think of grandma stirring her orange drink so that she can have a bowel movement,” the American gastroenterologist admits.
