Scientists have discovered another fuel source for marathon runners, and it could lead to new treatments for diseases such as multiple sclerosis.

Scientists have discovered another fuel source for runners. Myelin, the fatty substance that helps the nerve cells in our brains transmit electrical signals more effectively, was once believed to be an inert structure that didn’t change much after it was made.

But a new study in Nature Metabolism indicates that myelin lipids could act as a back-up fuel source for the brain during prolonged exercise, adding to mounting evidence that the substance is more dynamic than previously thought.
