High-powered Sydney couple find new success importing wines

A lawyer and a project manager paused their careers to champion Europe’s best female wine producers.

Surya Palaniappan and Josh Masters aren’t the first Australian couple to fall in love with wine on a trip to Tuscany. Neither are they the first couple to return to Sydney and start a business importing the wines they’ve fallen in love with. But they are the first to focus on bringing in wines produced by female winemakers.

“When we were in Italy, we kept tasting these wonderful wines made by women,” says Palaniappan. “But we’d never seen any of them in Australia. So, when we decided to start importing, we [decided] to find women making great wine. And it’s been so much fun: they’re all people you would want to have around your dinner table – no tickets on themselves, they just love what they do, and are an absolute pleasure to deal with. It’s been one of the best decisions we’ve made.”
