Michael Brand’s favourite part of the Art Gallery of NSW, of which he is director, is a corner window in what’s known as the Andrew Andersons wing. “When I stand there, I know I’m in Sydney. You see the harbour, the fig trees, Woolloomooloo. And then, of course, you turn around and there is the art.”
It’s not the first time that Brand, in talking about the massive AGNSW extension known as Sydney Modern, has referenced the harbour views ahead of the art. And he seems unperturbed should it further incite the critics.
