Why this New York potter spurns the wheel

Ceramicist Simone Bodmer-Turner channels influences from across time and place to create vessels that are dynamic sculptures radiating energy.

Simone Bodmer-Turner is a peripatetic ceramicist, working with artisans in Peru, Mexico and Japan as often as she can to immerse herself in the traditions of her craft. The long history of pottery in these cultures informs the designs she develops in her Brooklyn studio – hand-formed sculptural vessels that are at once timeless and of the moment.

With wanderlust frustrated this year, she’s travelled instead in her mind – in particular to France, where she has been finding inspiration in the organic architecture of Savin Couelle and the sinuous sculpture and interiors of Valentine Schlegel.
