The ACO is 50 years old and still rebelling
Born out of disaffection with the strictures of symphony orchestras, the Australian Chamber Orchestra has a typically wild and eclectic party planned for its golden jubilee.
On the evening of November 21st, 1975, cellist John Painter led a new band of string players on to the stage of the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall.
They called themselves the Australian Chamber Orchestra, and there was a hint of things to come in the name of the very first piece they played that night - Haydn’s Divertimento in A Major.
