This is a cinema year of high stakes. Offscreen, at least. Every current major Hollywood release is of great commercial consequence – to its studio, its entertainment conglomerate, or to the cinema sector globally.
The burden of this week’s release-of-consequence, Superman, weighs heavily on the Man of Steel’s perfectly sculpted shoulders. This new iteration meets expectations, low as they are, but doesn’t fly into fresh territory, even if it’s more connected to our modern world than most blockbusters.
