Opera Australia’s box office plunged 23 per cent in 2024, as a disastrous bet on Sunset Boulevard sent the country’s largest performing arts company to a $10.1 million operating loss.
Despite the dire numbers in OA’s 2024 annual report, released on Friday, chairman Rod Sims said the company would be “much closer to break-even” in 2025 after its “best-ever” summer season in inflation-adjusted terms. He said greater financial discipline around programming and spending had OA expecting “a small profit” in 2026.
