Opera Australia went from record revenue to a savage redundancy round within six months, but hopes a summer season with a more flexible operating model points to a future.

Australia's largest performing arts company was on a high in 2019, selling 660,000 tickets on its way to a healthy $6.3 million surplus. It will lose a multiple of that in 2020, and stands to lose even more on a three-month season announced on Thursday for January 2021.
