Opera Australia's world-first season of operas in which big screens replaced most of the sets has attracted first-timers, but some subscribers are yet to be convinced.

Australia's largest performing arts company premiered three of the "digital operas" in just four weeks during June and July. The season finished on Saturday with a twenty-third performance of Madama Butterfly at Sydney Opera House, where the screens allowed red bondage ropes to take on a life of their own.
