Netflix’s new hit should sound a warning for parents. Here’s why

There’s a scene in the new Netflix hit Adolescence in which Adam, the son of a police inspector who’s investigating whether a 13-year-old boy killed a female classmate, explains that a handful of seemingly innocuous emojis contain hidden messages linked to misogynistic content online.

The pill emoji refers to people who have seen the “truth” about gender relations, Adam says, while the 100 icon refers to the theory that most men have to trick women into liking them because 80 per cent of women are attracted to just 20 per cent of men.
