Do a Google Image search for “Frankenstein’s monster” and you’re likely to get a hirsute, smooth-skinned fellow who could almost pass for human were it not for his green skin and the neck bolts securing his head.
Mary Shelley, who created Frankenstein in her 1818 novel of that name, would be perplexed. Based on Boris Karloff’s portrayal of the monster in a series of 1930s movies, the suave green guy doesn’t look much like someone who’s been thrown together from stolen body parts.
