Deutscher and Hackett’s big end of year auction of Important Australian and International Art was both exciting and baffling, hitting the heights by setting record prices while also failing to sell works that looked odds-on to soar.
Snappy bidding drove Brett Whiteley’s painted ceramic, Bird In The Rain, 1984, to $225,000 including buyer’s premium, at Deutscher and Hackett’s auction in Melbourne on November 26. It was the highest price ever paid at auction for a Whiteley ceramic object.
