Sales about to spike for gas-guzzling utes, hybrids under gun
Car dealership groups expect a spike in demand for gas-guzzling utes late this year ahead of the federal government’s proposed emissions standards, which are also likely to penalise hybrid vehicles over the long term.
Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries chief executive Tony Weber said there were 76 hybrid variants on sale in Australia, and by 2027 only four would meet or better the standard as proposed by the government. Only those four would not generate a penalty under the proposed scheme.
