In late September, the wealthiest country in the world is hosting the glitziest jamboree on water: the Monaco Yacht Show. A combined £3 billion-worth ($5.8 billion) of brand-new superyachts will line Port Hercule, as the sunshine glints off the Norman Foster-designed Yacht Club de Monaco, itself conceived to resemble a boat.
But in recent years, the most exciting exhibits at Monaco have been vessels that will take you about as far as you can get from the Mediterranean rays: private submarines and submersibles. These metal pods were first marketed at Monaco in the late noughties. Even at an event predicated on glamour, they still turn heads.
