A group of AFL’s best-known figures has put the spotlight on mental health, with Leigh Matthews calling on football clubs to be a safe space for players.
In a busy grand final week known for its pressure-cooker environment, the AFL’s player of the century said sport at the highest level would always demand mental toughness. However, it was unreasonable to expect players to perform if they were subjected to stress around the clock.
