On the starting grid at Formula E’s London E-Prix, 22 drivers in high-performance vehicles line up ready for the last race of the season. A live orchestra and flashing lights build the tension for the thousands of fans crammed into the Excel, an exhibition and convention centre at Royal Victoria Dock in East London, to watch the race that will determine the world champion.
After the starter lights count down and the race begins, the cars scream off down the straight – not to the sound of roaring petrol engines, but a high-pitched whir. The sound is reminiscent of a child’s electric racetrack game, albeit rather more powerful.
