McSweyn in outside lane to Herb Elliott’s 1500m record

Australia moved closer to ending a 61-year drought in the Olympic 1500m contest on Tuesday when Stewart McSweyn advanced to the semi-finals of the race Herb Elliott dominated at Rome in 1960.

Tasmanian McSweyn advanced after finishing third in his heat with a 3:36.39 run, slower than the 3:32.17 the national champion showed he can post last year and slower than Elliott’s Olympic record-setting 3:35.6, which stood unbroken until 2000.
