Two years ago, Maggie Beer Holdings was unstoppable. The premium foods business had a market capitalisation of $200 million, growing an empire built on the back of expensive verjuice, pate and chutney.

Last year, that rapid growth gave way to reality. The company, named for the celebrity cook who sits on its board, struggled to turn a profit. Its array of businesses was complicated, the number of products dizzying.
