Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz says Facebook and Google's attempts to regulate themselves have failed and the government should tax them if they make good their threats to cut news from their platforms.

Dr Stiglitz said the market power Facebook and Google had was probably the worst that had happened before, and it was causing market failure.
