RBA’s rate pause delivers banks reprieve, but margin pressure remains

It is still a matter of when, not if, official rates fall further. And lenders have a terrible track record in passing on cuts.

The big banks received some respite on Tuesday from the relentless pressure on their net interest margins. But it’s still a matter of when, not if, official rates fall further.

The Reserve Bank of Australia’s decision to stay put on rates sorely disappointed mortgage holders, but within banks it equates to short-term relief and somewhat fatter net interest margins.
