Prudential watchdog halves $1b Westpac penalty

The banking watchdog will slash its $1 billion capital penalty on Westpac by half in recognition of the lender’s work improving risk management and governance since its 2019 money laundering scandal.

The Australian Prudential Regulation Authority said on Friday that the change will apply with immediate effect. The remaining $500 million overlay will stay in place pending further “validation work to assess the sustainability of improvements made in risk governance, culture and accountability”.
