Environmentalists accuse major banks of financing deforestation

Environmental activists have accused the country’s major banks of financing borrowers who are allegedly engaged in deforestation, raising questions about how closely lenders are scrutinising customers.

The Australian Conservation Foundation said a six-month investigation using satellite imagery had found all four major banks along with Rabobank, an agriculture specialist, had made loans to properties where deforestation had taken place over the year to July.
