When will coal exit the NEM?

Coal-fired power is on its slow march out of the nation’s energy mix, but there remains the big question of when exactly it will exit the energy grid.

Coal’s demise has long been trumpeted by clean energy advocates who want to see the end to all fossil fuels in Australia on the march to net zero emissions by 2050.

But the recent Australian Energy Market Operator report – which predicts the nation’s coal plants could be retiring five years faster than anticipated and be out of the National Electricity Market by 2040 – was still a shock to the system for even the most hardened energy observer.
