A renewable energy microgrid, complete with a solar farm, battery and hydrogen plant, will be built for residents in the world-heritage-protected Daintree Rainforest, after the federal government agreed to pay $18.75 million for the construction.

The region in North Queensland – which will be hotly contested at the looming federal election – is reliant on about 4 million litres of diesel fuel each year for power generation.
