Westpac is going backwards. Bank investors should take note

Anthony Miller says the continuity the election result brings is welcome. But his first-half results show the growth challenges for the bank and its rivals.

Westpac chief executive Anthony Miller has provided the first official reaction from the top end of town to Anthony Albanese’s thumping election victory – two parts sigh of relief, one part ringing endorsement.

Miller, who delivered Westpac’s results for the six months ending March 31 on Monday morning, says Albanese and his team ran an excellent campaign, and to emerge with an enlarged majority against the predictions of most pundits was a significant achievement.
